About the Course:
Human Rights and Islam is designed for students with strong interest in
Islamic law & governance, human rights laws, and religion and politics.
Human rights is a discourse that emerged in the context of violence
against and maltreatment of individuals, civilians, prisoners of war,
indigenous peoples, minorities, and prisoners of conscience. The violence
and coercion were generally undertaken by privileged groups and
state-apparatus during times of conflict and economic hardships. It is
during wars and armed conflicts that human rights are at great risk. This
course will look at the human rights protection mechanism (and lack
thereof) and history of treatment of individuals and peoples during times
of war and peace. We will start with the Islamic civilization and conclude
by looking at the modern Muslim world in the context of its treatment of
its own subjects and its interactions with other cultures, religious
groups, and other civilizations. The course will discuss concepts and
themes such as: religion and human rights, law and human rights, state and
human rights, politics and human rights, education and human rights,
ethics & morality, war, peace, aggression, self-defense theory, jihad,
sovereignty, self-determination, colonialism, independence, life an death,
human dignity, dissent and rebellion, etc... |
