with Ibn Khaldun, this course discusses major trends in Islamic religio-political
thought since the colonial period, focusing on encounters between the
Islamic and the modern world. Topics to be discussed include, inter alia,
the “renewal movements”; various religious reform tendencies; nationalism
orientations in Persian, Turkey and the Arab world; socialism; and
political Islamic movements. In English; prior Islamic coursework
