This is a new course designed for UI students who are interested in Islamic law and jurisprudence. We will begin by looking at (a) the sources of Islamic law, (b) the origins and functions of the various schools of jurisprudence, (c) Islamic legal philosophy, and (d) the corpus of Islamic legal rulings in the context of five major schools of law (Maliki, Hanafi, Ja`fari, Hanbali, and Shafi`i).

The topics that will be studied in the context of the above mentioned schools will consist of: marriage, divorce, inheritance, trusts, and property laws. Finally, we will have an overview of the major legal topics as covered by the most recent formulation of classical Islamic law; that is, the Ottoman Legal Code, also known as the mejelle (or majalla).
